Short answer: I run Claude as an automated first pass on every pull request: it flags logic errors, security issues, performance anti-patterns, and missing error handling before a human looks. Reviewers then spend their time on architecture and business logic instead of nitpicks. AI does the first pass; humans keep the judgment calls.
Code reviews matter, but they eat time. Here’s how I wire Claude into the workflow to make them faster and more thorough.
The problem with manual-only code reviews

The workflow

What it is good and bad at
From running it on my own pull requests, the split is fairly consistent.
It is good at the things that are tedious to check and mechanical to spot: an unhandled error path, a value used before the null check, a loop that hits the database once per row, a name that says the opposite of what the function does. It reads the whole diff at the same level of attention, which is exactly where a human reviewer fades.
It is bad at knowing what matters. It will report a real but trivial issue with the same seriousness as a real and serious one, and it will confidently describe a bug that the surrounding code already prevents. That is why the output has to be a comment on the PR and not a gate: treat it as a list of things to look at, and expect to dismiss some of them.
The failure mode to watch for is a review that reads as thorough because it is long. Findings are cheap to generate. Ask it to justify each one with the input that would trigger it, and the list gets shorter and more useful.
Getting started
You don’t need much to start:
- Pick where it runs, a CI step on
pull_request(e.g. a GitHub Action), or a local pass with Claude Code before you request review. - Feed it the diff: pass the PR diff plus a short rubric: security, error handling, naming, edge cases.
- Ask for structured output: categorized findings with a severity level, so authors can triage in seconds.
- Post it as a comment: a bot comment on the PR, clearly labelled as an automated first pass.
The key is treating AI as a first pass, not a replacement. Human judgment stays essential for anything context-dependent.
