Why you should be a Software Engineer

And how to go about it.

Skills of life

There are many skills in our lives we think we should acquire, being socially capable for society, romantically for our partner, emotionally for family members.

We should be good in handicraft around the house, know how to earn enough money to provide a stable pillar for others to lean on, understand political issues, be open to all kinds of influences, be fit and healthy in physical and mental terms and on and on.

The list continues and the longer we live the more demands we have on the ability of ourselves.

Today we tackle one of those hurdles. One which once picked up, will benefit in uncountable ways professionally, which will of course impact life quality also in other areas.

Tobias becomes a developer

Since young I always was fascinated about computers. I felt every single one being a miraculous machine bringing so many influences and knowledge together. First with personal computer, later with having mobile phones with an infinite source of knowledge right at your finger tip in your pocket.

However, the task of manipulating this machine through code looked extremely daunting to me and my mindset then told me that it has to be learned early to reach a professional level and to have impact on society. I was stuck in this limitation for more than a decade.

In a now-or-never move after graduating from university I’ve decided that I have to give it a shot or erase the thought of learning to code altogether. I’ve sold most of my belongings minimalism and flew with $5000 to Thailand with the mission to make it as programmer, burning the bridges behind me. I’ve studied 8 months fulltime, going through many different courses to get a feeling of what is valuable and worth knowing. After this 8 months I’ve found a job in a startup and since then, it was always easy to find jobs for me as anyone who can build something is sought after.
