TobiReader — Privacy Policy

TobiReader is a private, local-first RSS/Atom reader. It is designed so that your data stays on your device. This policy explains what that means in practice and applies to the TobiReader Android app.

The short version

  • No account. TobiReader has no sign-up and no TobiReader-operated server.
  • No tracking, no ads, no analytics. We do not collect, profile, or sell any data.
  • Your data stays on your device. Feeds, articles, reading history, stars, and settings are stored locally on your phone.

What data TobiReader stores (on your device only)

  • The feeds you subscribe to and their categories.
  • Downloaded/cached articles and your reading state (read, saved, starred, last-read).
  • Your app settings (appearance, language, reading preferences).
  • API keys you optionally enter for AI or translation providers — stored only in your device’s secure storage, never transmitted to us.

This information never leaves your device except through the optional, user-configured features below.

Optional features that contact third parties you choose

These are off by default and only ever talk to endpoints you configure. When you use them, your data is handled under that third party’s own privacy policy — not ours:

  • Feed fetching: TobiReader downloads content directly from the feed/website URLs you add, over the internet.
  • Self-hosted sync (FreshRSS): if you enter your own FreshRSS server, read state syncs to your server. We never see it.
  • AI summaries / translation: if you enter an API key (e.g. OpenRouter, OpenAI, DeepL), the article text you choose to summarize/translate is sent to that provider to generate the result. No key, no calls.
  • Text-to-speech: read-aloud runs on your device.

Permissions

  • Internet — to download the feeds and articles you subscribe to.
  • Audio (record/modify/foreground playback) — used solely to play read-aloud (text-to-speech) audio, including while the app is in the background. It is not used to record or capture audio.

Data sharing & sale

We do not collect your data, so there is nothing for us to share or sell.

Children

TobiReader is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from anyone.

Your rights (GDPR)

Because TobiReader stores your data only on your own device and we hold none of it, you remain in full control: uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage, removes the data. Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a new date.
